About South Hobart

Nestled in the foothills of Mt Wellington/kunanyi, South Hobart is the first true suburb of Hobart, Tasmania.  Perhaps perversely, South Hobart cannot be said to be strictly “south” of any major reference point: the suburb cannot be easily pigeon-holed.  South Hobart has its own definite character and sense of community.

South Hobart is a beautiful location for quiet family living. The suburb features a variety of attractions including public gardens, walks, places of historical interest, a wealth of heritage buildings, plus sporting and educational facilities. Read more of South Hobart’s local history.

Among our tourist attractions are the World Heritage-listed Cascades Female Factory Historic Site, the Cascade Brewery and Gardens, and the Hobart Rivulet Linear Park. Increasingly visitors are coming to the rivulet with hopes of sighting a platypus, which is both an opportunity and a challenge.

South Hobart has a rich sporting heritage. It is a popular place for mountain biking and rock climbing; and home to both the Southern Tasmanian Badminton Association and South Hobart FC, Tasmania's most successful soccer club.

South Hobart has ten cafes and restaurants, a butcher and a pharmacy, two groceries, two schools, and two medical practices as well as St John's Hospital.
